DISTANT COUSINS

Out Of The Darkness  Available Now!

Jullian Records recording artists Distant Cousins, an Indie folk-pop trio, were working on an uplifting batch of songs earmarked for their next studio release.  October 7th changed everything as it became a galvanizing moment for a band with deep Jewish roots.

On October 8th, the Cousins began working on a poignant six-song collection that would become Out of the Darkness. out on August 18.  The EP reaches deep into the trio’s collective heart for the most personal artistic statement in its decade-plus history.

“The album's main message is hope and healing,” says Dov Rosenblatt. “we are stepping “out of the darkness” and into the light, with the songs being the pathway.”

The songs on Out of the Darkness are the trio’s first to use a combination of Hebrew and English with many of the direct quotes from Psalms. The achingly beautiful texts and inspiring interpretations are integrated into the band’s time-honored indie-folk sensibility.

“In the past, we created music outside of the religious music world, but this was a conscious decision to put our Jewish identity first,” Ami Kozak shares.

Dov adds, “We sing in both Hebrew and English on the EP, and we hope it resonates with everyone.”

“We have always aimed to write music that is universal and open—and I don’t feel these songs are any different,” says Duvid Swirsky, “but the inspiration for Out of the Darkness comes from an intimate place, as we were writing to comfort each other during this time of intense upheaval. Emotions were raw but it was also the beginning of the healing process the three of us have gone through, and we finally feel ready to share that so that others can feel it too.”

Dov offers, “After October 7th, I called Duvid and said, you know those melodies from Tehillim (Psalms) you’ve been writing? I think I need them.”

The EP’s title was pinched from the lyric passage of their song ‘Me’Ayin’: “Out of the darkness/Out of the tears /Out of the place/Where songs begin/Into the spirit/that can’t be broken/A flood of light/through the iron wall. The song is a rousing modern folk-pop tune lavished with ethereal textures, electric guitars, soaring hooks, and drums.

Resilience, faith, and triumph of the human spirit shine through on the track, which features English verses and Hebrew choruses.

True to their mission of healing, the band’s first single is “Dimati,” which translates to “My Tears.” It is in Hebrew, and it is a beautiful folk song recorded exactly as it is portrayed in the video: live in the studio with acoustic guitars, bass, and the interlace of the Cousins’ gorgeous harmonic vocals. The song is so powerful that knowing the language to feel pain and catharsis coursing through it is unnecessary.

Dov says, “I love Sigur Ros, and don’t know specifically what they’re singing about, but you still feel the sentiments in their songs.”

The EP concludes with the lushly-layered folk song “The Unknown,” which exudes a sense of wonder and uplift but with wise words steeped in hard truths and tested faith. One stanza reads: “On the corner of Venice/And some other dimension/See someone stagger/And cough in the distance/And there but for the grace/Of whoever is listening/Go you and I/Into the unknown.”

The journey of Out of The Darkness has been profound and transformative for Distant Cousins. “In life, there is just no time to waste in expressing the deepest, truest part of who you are, and that’s what this project is” Duvid says.

Ami adds, “For this collection of songs, Dov and Duvid bring the emotional resonance, and I come in with a more pragmatic view of not only the world but specifically October 7th.  In that way, we are a perfect trio, they round out my edges, and I give them a bit of a ‘zetz.’ Our common goal is to bring healing through music to anyone listening.”

“I felt so broken inside before we made this EP, but the three of us coming together restored something in all of us” Dov concludes.

Distant Cousins was formed in 2013,to explore creativity outside the guys Jewish-centric music community. The band has since released two full-length albums, two EPs, and numerous singles and collaborations, many of which have been featured in film, television, and commercials.

Distant Cousins will tour this summer and open for Matisyahu on select dates in August.
